2025 Goal Review

For 2025, I had 5 goals — I landed 3/5 for sure and I’ll give myself substantial partial credit / goal relief on the other 2. Overall, call it a 90% success year :):

  • Goal: Publish 4 papers
    • Result: I published 2, but…ladies and gentlemen and those who know better, I landed first a short-term but awesome contract job, and then a for-real full-time job.
    • Since these events totally changed my time availability for 3/4ths of the year, I’m calling this a success.
    • I do wish I’d been just a bit more productive in general, but when I reflect on the specifics of where my time went…I can’t complain.
  • Present at 5 community / public events
    • Result: I presented at at least 6 (Norwescon, FOSSY, WorldCon, the Unitary Foundation, WikiEdu, and SeaGL)
    • Success!
  • Extend my research network with additional service (+ at least 20 peer reviews)
    • Result: I did quite a few more than 20 peer reviews, organized a panel at 4S, and organized a track at FOSSY.
    • Success!
  • Build language proficiency in Spanish to a high B1 level (80-100 CEFR score)
    • Result: Not a success. At the time I wrote this goal, I didn’t have a realistic sense of how quickly one can progress with language learning using the Green Owl app.
    • I kept track of my progress; I started at a score of 21 in January, and increased by maybe one point per month. Even if I had ‘worked harder’, I don’t think this was realistic to begin with (my current score is 36).
    • I do have a 629-day streak however >:-).
  • Read 50 books
    • Result: I’m not sure how I did! I did read quite a few books, but I didn’t do a good job keeping track of them. I probably read 30 books; 1-2 audio books / month and 1-2 print books.
